Easter Joy

Dear Mater Dei Community,

Happy Easter! We are filled with joy as we contemplate the resurrection of Our Lord. It is a lasting joy as described by St. Josemaria Escriva who said "Easter is a time of joy - a joy not confined to this period of the liturgical year, but to be found really and fully in the Christian's heart". Our hearts are full.

In this newsletter we'll share what the students have been up to this past month. We're also happy to share our newest promo video that summarizes our education program from an "academic perspective". May God bless you abundantly this joyful Easter season.

Day-to-Day at Mater Dei

With midterms behind them, students and instructors can take a breather. Since there's nothing more enjoyable than breathing in the smell of a dissected cow eyeball, we invited local ophthalmologist Matt Cossack to walk our sophomores through the process in biology. As Dr. Cossack dissected the eyeball, he taught the students about general anatomy of the eye and associated structures as well as common causes for ocular surgery. It was a fascinating lab experiment to kick off their unit on the special senses of the nervous system. We are grateful to Dr. Cossack for sharing his time and wealth of knowledge with us.

We held our open house event which was well attended. A presentation was given and each of our Mater Dei instructors briefly introduced themselves. Prospective families then had the chance to ask questions, tour the education center, and mingle with instructors and current families. Registration for next year is now OPEN for 9th, 10th and 11th grade so please spread the word. Parents may contact Marie at 210-563-8859 or contact@materdeiapostolate.org with any questions or to set up a tour or shadow day for prospective students. We look forward to welcoming new families into our Mater Dei community!

Service Project

For our March service project we wanted to serve those who are closest to us here at Mater Dei, those whom the Lord has placed "right in front of us". We invited Holy Family Church staff and Mater Dei parents, families and instructors to enjoy a delicious brunch on the Solemnity of Saint Joseph....prepared, cooked and served fully by the students! Our guests enjoyed homemade waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and fresh fruit salad. We were so excited to show our appreciation for the love and support we continually receive from our Mater Dei community. After everyone was fed, we gathered into the Church together with our guests to pray the joyful mysteries of the rosary, in thanksgiving for our apostolate and for the loving intercession of Saint Joseph.

Mater Dei Academic Video

We recently launched a new video that summarizes our education program from an "academic perspective". With our last video we heard from the students, so this time we went to the instructors. Two of our instructors, Mr. Zach Bennett and Mr. John Niemann, describe various aspects of the Mater Dei education program in this short, five-minute video. They discuss the benefits of hybrid education, the definition of classical education and the importance of Catholic formation to bring it all together. We are truly blessed to have the partnership of such faithful and joyful instructors here at Mater Dei. Please share the video to spread the word about our program.
